Women and Mammography and a Safer Approach

Last month, an independent task force came out with a new recommendation for women saying they can wait until age 50 to get their first mammogram. And even then, they said, you only need to get one every other year. Well, women everywhere ran around like chickens with their heads cut off.  Some were so confused by the latest advice that they actually seemed distraught during their prime time news interviews.  And even a national women’s health organization spoke out against the new recommendation.  For two weeks straight, the report was being debated in the media.

The sad truth is that women were up in arms because they think mammograms are the best thing out there to save lives.  That couldn’t be further from the truth! There’s a far better test out there. It’s called a thermogram.  According to some data, this highly accurate test can detect cancerous cells up to 10 years before a mammogram. Plus, there’s NO radiation involved and it doesn’t cause trauma to the breast. Unfortunately, it’s not widely available yet. But with a little luck, we’ll see mammograms go by the wayside as more and more of us learn about their shortcomings. And we’ll see an increased demand for better testing. So women, go online and search out knowledgeable physicians offering breast thermography.  My information is that the cost of the test is about the same as the one that irradiates you.

Why Dismiss Mammograms:

#1: Radiation: A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. And it’s an established fact (though the American Cancer Society doesn’t want to admit it) that each test generates a huge dose of radiation. In fact, each “life-saving” mammogram generates 1 rad (radiation-absorbed doses) of exposure. And even just 1 rad can be harmful. The former Director of the National Cancer Institute ( Dr. Frank Raucscher) says every rad of exposure increases your lifetime risk of breast cancer by 1 percent. That’s for women ages 35 to 50. Other experts put the risk even higher. Especially if you got your first mammogram in the 1970s when each test delivered 5 to 10 rads of exposure.   Over a lifetime, you could actually increase your risk of breast cancer by 30 to 40 percent just by following your well-intentioned doctor’s advice and getting annual tests.

#2: Breast Trauma: The mammogram procedure painfully compresses a women’s breasts. This kind of intense trauma, year after year, can liberate tumor cells that your body might have kept contained.

#3: False negatives, false positives, and over diagnosis. Even the federal government’s task force has admitted that annual testing only pays off for a very small number of women in their 40s.  If you’re younger than 50, annual mammograms most often lead to false positives and unnecessary biopsies.  In women age 50 to 74, routine mammograms often lead to “over diagnosis.”  While mammograms do find small tumors in this age group of women, many of the tumors would never have caused a problem or “shortened a woman’s life.”   Laura J. Esserman, M.D., a breast surgeon, argues that mammograms often catch slow-growing types of cancer that may not need treatment. But they can miss aggressive, deadly types of cancer that need treatment. In fact, overall mammograms miss up to 20 percent of malignant breast cancer.

Dr. Allan Spreen writes about a major mammogram study conducted in Norway where researchers followed more than 200,000 women (age 50 to 64) as part of a national breast-screening program for six years. About half of the women received three mammograms during that time. The other half of the women got a single “screening mammogram” at the end of the six-year period. Researchers found that breast cancer rates were 22 percent higher among the women given regular mammograms. Did the extra mammograms actually increase the rate of breast cancer? He thinks it’s highly possible.  The Norwegian scientists seemed to think something else was going on too. They believed the second group of women actually did get cancer just as often. It’s just that some of their cancers may have “spontaneously regressed.”  The scientists believe the women who got just one mammogram developed just as many tumors. But their tumors went undiagnosed and, therefore, untreated. And given time, some of them disappeared. In other words, the body healed itself.

The report was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Yet conventional doctors still spew long-winded defenses of mammograms.

Time to educate yourselves and look for safer alternatives.  Breast Thermography is just such a too.

Monsanto Goon and the US Food Supply: Update

The following is an update report from Organic Consumer Association about how Agribusiness giant MONSANTO taints the American food supply by infiltrating our government.

President Obama has again broken his campaign promise to keep corporate lobbyists out of his administration by appointing yet another Monsanto cheerleader and pesticide lobbyist to a prominent position.

President Obama has named Islam Siddiqui to represent U.S. agricultural trade interests. Siddiqui is the current Vice-President for Science and Regulatory Affairs with CropLife America, a pesticide and biotechnology trade group known for aggressively pushing the agenda of agribusinesses, including Monsanto, Syngenta, Cargill and Dow. During Siddiqui’s term alone, CropLife has been a driving force undermining U.S. compliance with international agreements ranging from the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting chemicals to the Stockholm Convention, an effort to regulate the use of toxins, including DDT, PCBs and dioxins. Siddiqui’s group also publicly criticized and ridiculed Michele Obama for planting a pesticide-free organic garden at the White House.

Siddiqui first caught the Organic Consumers Association’s attention during the Clinton administration when he worked at USDA on the implementation of national organic standards. He was vocal in calling for nuclear irradiation, sewage sludge, and GMOs to be allowed in organic production. After a long campaign led by the OCA and our allies, Siddiqui and the USDA backed down.

Why would President Obama betray his ideals and organic consumers? Could the fact that Siddiqui and much of the entire chemical-biotech lobby gave Obama major campaign contributions during the 2008 campaign have anything to do with it?

Siddqui’s appointment was due for a confirmation vote in the Finance Committee on November 20. The hearing was postponed and has not yet been rescheduled. Could OCA, the 80 groups in opposition, and the 77,000 people who have signed the Stop Siddiqui petition have anything to do with it?  LEARN MORE-TAKE ACTION at ORGANIC CONSUMERS.ORG

Corruption at the FDA Over Dental Amalgam

Issue:  Amalgam Dental Fillings = Mercury Poisoning.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) website recently removed a warning that it previously reluctantly posted about the toxicity of amalgam dental fillings.  Why?  FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg holds stock in the company (Henry Schein) that makes mercury fillings and she thinks it’s okay that Americans continue to be poisoned by this proved neurotoxin.  The silver fillings placed in people’s mouths are comprised of 50% mercury.

Mercury fillings have been proven to release gases (even during normal food chewing) which travel into people’s bloodstreams and into their brains, damaging myriad organs and systems throughout the body.  Most dentists don’t know how and don’t care to learn how to safely remove the fillings.  People end up swallowing mercury chunks and breathe the fumes during the process.

The American government, the FDA, the American Dental Association (which receives billions of dollars in fees derived from holding the patent to the poison amalgam) all say it’s okay to poison people with this stuff at the same time they warn you not to eat too much fish because they may contain high levels of mercury (tuna is notorious for this).

Regarding FDA Commissioner Hamburg:

1. When Senator Enzi asked Dr. Hamburg a written question about the amalgam rule, why did she not then disclose the stock and say she would be disqualified from participating?
2.  Why, when taking office as Commissioner and still holding stock options, did she not recuse herself from participating in the rule-making right away?
3.   On what date did Margaret Hamburg ALLEGEDLY recuse herself?
4.   Did Margaret Hamburg approve any draft of the rule or approve which staff would draft it?
5.  Since Commissioner Lester Crawford was forced out of office in 2005 for conflict of interest involving stock ownership, why does Commissioner Hamburg believe this situation is different, and why does she believe she should remain in office?
6.  Why is the amalgam rule so incredibly favorable to dental products colossus Henry Schein and so unfavorable to America’s children, giving Schein the right to untrammeled amalgam sales without even a requirement that patients be told of the mercury in amalgam?

The FDA is a sham organization and so is the American Dental Association (ADA).

It is unlikely that health care reform will ever take place in this country as long as special interests rule and keep our legislators in their pockets, bribing them with election donations and gifts or threatening to destroy their re-election efforts if they oppose them.

Healthcare Reform Scam

On June 15th, 2009, President Obama addressed the American Medical Association to garner their support for his health care reform agenda. At one point he was actually booed by this organization that allegedly embraces the Hippocratic Oath (‘first, do no harm’). This is the same organization that bows to the pharmaceutical industry and that tells our nation’s doctors (many of whom are too lazy to research new protocols, anyway) that they absolutely may not reveal alternative medical approaches to healing illnesses and disease.

The AMA was devised as a means to protect the interests of doctors not patients. We already know that the Food and Drug Administration really exists to protect business interests. It too bows to the pharmaceutical industry. Just recently I learned that the FDA plans to ban the natural vitamin B6 nutrient pyridoxamine (which by the way, is found in many foods) not because it’s unsafe, but because a major pharmaceutical company wants to patent it, thereby making it only available as a prescription drug! The FDA has definitively placed the interests of big business over the ability of Americans to purchase a safe and natural supplement.

High on Obama’s list of ways to achieve reform was preventive care. IS HE KIDDING?

The AMA won’t let its members give important nutrition-based, anti-aging or complementary care information to patients. The American Dental Association still forces its members to hide the dangers of mercury and push poisonous fluoride into people’s mouths and down their throats. The FDA is a shill for the pharmaceutical industry and big business in general.

All you have to do is look around at all the non-organic, chemical and pesticide-ridden crap that the FDA says is okay to sell to the public (from the food that’s sold to the cleaners we tend to use to the cosmetics and personal care items we might wear and use) .

The Environmental Protection Agency allows businesses to poison and otherwise harm people, animals and the environment on a daily basis.

You want PREVENTIVE CARE, Mr. President? I suggest that America starts doing business differently and embraces a healthful lifestyle on all fronts. Ban the FDA and all the other pseudo-protective agencies that government has coughed up. We’d do better without them.

U.S Healthcare, Wellness, Individual Freedoms

If you were to read the March 2009 issue of Life Extension Magazine, published by Life Extension Foundation (lef.org), you would find a fascinating editorial that will knock your socks off when it comes to the inefficiency/ineffectiveness of the FDA and downright corruption perpetrated by the pharmaceutical companies against everyone. What I find astounding and particularly galling is how the U.S. government has been complicit in it all. Greed and ignorance is how Congress operates, it would seem, otherwise how else would you explain Congress actually allowing the pharmaceutical industry to write policy (such as dictating the exorbitant cost of prescription drug purchases that the government’s Medicare program must pay)?

To fix our healthcare system:
1. Get rid of the FDA as it exists today – put alternative medicine specialists in charge and under no circumstances allow the usual special interests groups (pharmaceutical industry lobbyists) anywhere near it.

2. No direct to consumer advertising by pharmaceutical companies. No pharmaceutical company monopolies.

3. No government censorship when it comes to alternative medicine approaches. No jailing people to stop the flow of valuable information. I strongly recommend you view the information at Antiaging Systems and I hope that someone has not hacked that system to destroy the information available there.

4. Stop all attacks against the vitamin/supplement/alternative health industry and when research about a supplement is presented (like the recent Vitamin E scare) make sure it is done by reputable 3rd parties using the correct “natural” supplement that is supported by the vitamin/supplement industry and not some garbage synthetic at reduced dosage (which is precisely what occurred).

5. Revamp the American Medical Association and American Dental Association. They are both stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry.

6. Cancer research and therapies: The Germans have an effective alternative non-invasive therapy involving heating the body. Why don’t we? Why has virtually no one in the United States even heard of it, what about other effective therapies? Because the AMA won’t allow anything that doesn’t make them a ton of money through invasive, non-effective “treatment” protocols that give them and their doctors kickbacks from useless chemotherapy.

7. Health Insurance: Universal care for all legal U.S. citizens. Stop the unfair overpricing by the industry. Make sure wellness programs are covered and the use of vitamins/supplements. Get rid of gender inequality. Promote funding of family planning/birth control instead of Viagra.

8.  Read this fascinating article about Monsanto controlling our food supply and how the FDA and congress has let a giant corporation destroy your health along with farmers’ livelihoods.
